Erickson, who can play both infield and outfield, comes to the Tigers after playing four years of club softball for the Sioux Falls Diamonds program and a solid career at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School. This past summer, she played for the Sioux Falls Diamonds Black 16U team and this fall she got experience with the Diamonds Gold 16U team.
As a junior and the starting shortstop for Roosevelt, Erickson – who is a switch hitter – hit .453, stole 16 bases and scored 21 games. She hit .459 for the Diamonds Gold in the 2011 SW Minnesota Fall League. Erickson helped her team to a fourth-place finish at the NAFA Nationals and earned two MVP recognitions at the Triple Crown Oklahoma City.
“Laura is the total package,” Kieff said. “She is just one of those people coaches love to have on their team. She is fast and plays multiple positions, and all of them at an extremely high level. She bats left and right and just has great instincts.
“Laura always has a smile on her face and is a pleasure to be around. She is a great role model for kids and peers alike. We are fortunate to have been able to sign her as she will be a huge asset to our program and our university.”
Erickson, who currently has a 3.9 GPA, will graduate from Sioux Falls Roosevelt in May. Erickson plans to major in nursing at Dakota Wesleyan. The DWU nursing program is fully accredited and is designed to offer knowledge and learning experiences necessary to prepare individuals for associate degree nursing practice (http://www.dwu.edu/nursing).
Erickson joins Norfolk, Neb., shortstop and utility player Cassie Fink and Brianna Onstad, a pitcher from Sacramento, Calif., as the Tigers’ first three signees for 2013. Dakota Wesleyan went 12-23 overall and 7-13 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference in 2011.
