MITCHELL, S.D. – With the graduation of senior goalie Jordan Werner, the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s soccer team entered the offseason in need of a goalie to replace the three-time All-Great Plains Athletic Conference honoree. This week, Tiger head coach Jeremy Tosaya announced he found someone to help do just that.

Manny Paravalos, a goalie from Panama City Beach, Fla., will join the Tigers starting in the 2012 season, Tosaya announced Wednesday afternoon. Paravalos is the seventh signee for Dakota Wesleyan this offseason and the first goalie to join the list.

Paravalos, a 6-foot keeper who plans to major in pre-med at DWU, was a four-year starter for the J.R. Arnold High School Marlins. He recorded 10 shutouts as a sophomore and 11 as a junior, and went 600 minutes without giving up a goal in his junior season. He earned MVP awards at several tournaments and showcases, and was the starting goalie for the Emerald Coast United U15-U17 team and the FC Dallas-Emerald Coast team.

Paravalos also participated in the Disney Showcase and the State Cup in his U16, U17 and U18 years. He helped his U16 team to the round of 16 and also helped his high school team to the district tournament as a freshman and a county championship in 2010 and 2011.

As well as being a standout goalie, Paravalos is also a solid student. He maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher all four years, earned the AP Scholar Award and the Superintendent Award for maintaining a 4.0 while participating in soccer.

“Replacing a three-time All-GPAC selection like Jordan Werner is going to be a key to our success in the future, and our goal is to have a core of keepers here at DWU that will get that job done,” Tosaya said. “Manny has an impressive resume of experience and will definitely add to the quality of that keeper core coming into 2012. I’m excited to see what he will bring to the competition as we look for two guys who can lead us in the back.

“His playing experience in the FC Dallas youth system and at his high school has obviously been a major factor to his success so far, and I think he’s going to be a great addition to our team.”

Paravalos is one of three goalies on the Tigers’ roster after the graduation of Werner. Eric Fjerestad (Sioux Falls, S.D.) has been with the team for two seasons and will be a junior in the fall and freshman Alex Ek joined the squad this past fall after a successful high school career in Mantorville, Minn. Werner started all 19 games for the Tigers and led the team to a 9-9-1 record in 2011. He set a school record with 133 saves and recorded eight shutouts.
