MARSHALL, Minn. – The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team dropped a pair of nonconference duals Wednesday night at a tri-match in Marshall, Minn. The Tigers, who finished 3-2 and took sixth at the NAIA National Duals this past weekend, lost a 25-12 decision to Waldorf College and a 35-3 dual to host-school Southwest Minnesota State University.
In its first match of the day, the Tigers – who jumped from No. 16 to No. 15 in this week’s NAIA Top 25 Wrestling Poll – didn’t pick up their first win against Waldorf until Nick Hutcheson pinned his opponent in 5:45 at 165 pounds. Tyler Sarringar pinned his opponent in 1:40 at 184 pounds, but Waldorf – which is receiving votes in the NAIA – won the other eight matches. Waldorf picked up seven decisions and a major decision.
In its second match of the day, Dakota Wesleyan’s lone win came at 157 pounds when Kyle Gerlach beat Josh Anderson by a 12-5 decision. SMSU won four decisions, three major decisions, a technical fall and once by forfeit.
Dakota Wesleyan is back in action Saturday, Jan. 14, when it travels to Fremont, Neb., for the Viking-Warrior Open hosted by Midland University. The Tigers are back at home Wednesday, Jan. 25, when they host Jamestown College.
