MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball is in the midst of its best season in the past four years, and the future looks bright for the Tigers. DWU loses just two seniors to graduation in May, and Thursday afternoon, second-year head coach Jason Christensen announced his first recruit for the 2012-13 season is a talented in-state player.
Hitchcock-Tulare standout Kristen Binger joins a DWU squad that, in 2012-13, will have three seniors and four juniors that have seen the bulk of the playing time for the past two seasons. The 5-foot-10 guard/forward combo is a three-year starter and four-time letter winner for the Patriots.
As a junior, Binger averaged 12.1 points and 5 rebounds per game to go along with four assists and two steals per game. She helped Hitchcock-Tulare to a 12-10 record and a second-place finish in the conference. Binger has earned conference MVP honors and was an all-conference second team selection as a junior. She has been named the Team Hustler twice and was also named the team’s MVP.
Binger, who plans to major in pre-pharmacy, also lettered four times in both volleyball and track and is a four-year member of the honor roll.
“We are happy to welcome a player like Kristen to the Tiger family,” Christensen said. “She represents the kind of well-rounded student-athlete we are looking to sign.”
Dakota Wesleyan is currently 14-11 overall and 5-10 and in eighth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Tigers travel to Midland University Saturday, Feb. 4. They are currently eighth in the league and are looking to hold on to a spot in the conference’s eight-team postseason tournament.
