MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team added a talented transfer to its 2012-13 roster this week when head coach Shane Murphy announced the signing of Aireus Stephenson.
Stephenson comes to Dakota Wesleyan after playing for South Dakota State University as well as Colby Community College. Stephenson, a 6-foot guard originally from Atlanta, Ga., played in 18 games off the bench for the Jacks in the 2010-11 season. He averaged 2.5 points per game and finished the year with 20 assists. He also went 5-for-16 from long range, including a three to put South Dakota State up for good in a win against Nevada on Nov. 30, 2010.
Prior to playing for the Jacks, Stephenson – who will have senior eligibility for the Tigers – played two seasons at Colby Community College in Colby, Kan. He averaged 13.4 points and recorded 65 assists as a freshman and averaged 14.8 points per game and had 97 total assists as a sophomore. He had a 4.0 with a criminal justice and pre-law major at Colby and was named to the 2010 All-Kansas Academic team.
“Aireus is a big, strong guard who has the potential to be a big-time difference maker for us next year,” said Murphy, who recently completed his second season with the Tigers.
Stephenson graduated from Merrillville High School in 2008. He averaged 15 points, four assists and two rebounds per game and shot 40 percent from the field as a senior for the Pirates.
Stephenson is the 10th signee for the Tiger men for the upcoming season. He joins fellow transfers Danny Maman and Clint Roy, who both come to DWU from Glendale Community College. Incoming freshmen include Adam Fink (Armour, S.D.); Matt Henriksen (Mitchell, S.D.); Jade Miller (Mitchell, S.D.); Trae Bergh (Crooks, S.D.); Jon Alford (Naper, Neb.); Matt Appel (Fulda, Minn.) and Kyle Mathis (Winner, S.D.).
