MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team added a third signee for the 2012-13 season this week when head coach Adam Anderson announced the signing of Jay Determan.
Determan, a Burke, S.D., native, is the third South Dakota native to sign with the Tigers for the upcoming season. He joins Hot Springs’ Brady Besco and Winner’s Anthony Husher, as well as eight other South Dakota natives already on the Dakota Wesleyan roster.
Determan joins the Tigers after earning four varsity letters on the South Central boys’ golf team. He had a stroke average of 80 and finished in 21st at the Class B state golf tournament as a senior in 2011. That same year, he took third at regions and helped the Cougars to the region title and a fifth-place finish at the state meet.
“Jay is excited to be a part of the Tiger golf family and to attend Dakota Wesleyan, where other members of his family have attended and participated in athletics as well,” Anderson said. “I am happy that Jay will be a part of our men’s team. He is a very positive person with a good attitude for the game, and he will be a great teammate for the next four years.”
Determan, who attended Burke High School, also lettered five times in basketball and four in football. He earned student of the month honors, was a member of the honor roll and earned academic all-state honors in golf. He plans to major in athletic training at Dakota Wesleyan.
Determan joins a Tiger men’s squad that finished sixth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings in 2011-12 and lost two seniors to graduation. Among the returning golfers are senior Travis Johnson, who earned All-GPAC First Team honors, and Josh Korn, who earned honorable mention accolades in his sophomore season.
