MITCHELL, S.D. – Raeanne Klein has been making the most of her summer off from classes at Dakota Wesleyan University.

Klein, who will be a senior at DWU this fall, has used her time off to do some traveling, coaching and competing, and has fared well so far this summer. The Gregory, S.D., native coached a local 4-H archery team and has competed in three tournaments so far with three more left on her this summer and fall.

Klein – a member of the DWU cheerleading squad – was chosen to coach South Dakota’s 4-H National Recurve Archery team. She coached four male archers who competed in Grand Island, Neb., June 17-22. The group placed in team events in all three rounds, and Klein also helped at least one individual place in each round. Her group finished third overall for team score out of 11 states represented at the tournament.

Individually, Klein has also experienced much success. Her first competition of the summer was the Midwest Outdoor Section June 23-24 in Coon Rapids, Minn. She scored 1,031 out of 1,120 and missed first place by just 27 points. At the outdoor section, participants shot three rounds at targets any distance between 20 feet and 80 yards.

Klein traveled to Yankton, S.D., for two tournaments July 7-8, and won both events. The first was the First Dakota Classic. She competed in the collegiate female division and scored a 982 out of 1,200. Nearly 200 people ranging in division from cub (up to 12-years-old) to pro to master seniors (65 and older) competed at the event, where individuals shot four rounds of five arrows at 40, 50 and 60 yards over two days at a paper target.

While in Yankton, Klein also competed at the National Unmarked 3D competition. At the event, individuals shot one arrow apiece at 30 different 3D targets at unmarked yardage from five to 50 yards. More than 80 people competed in the different divisions, and Klein won the adult female division with a 536 out of a possible 600 points.

Also on Klein’s list of tournaments this summer is the State 3D shoot July 21-22 in Custer, S.D.; the state outdoor tournament Aug. 4-5 in Aberdeen, S.D. and the 3D U.S. Intercollegiate Championships Oct. 20-21 in Columbia, Mo.

Klein is a member of the DWU Archery Club, which is open to all faculty, staff and students. Those interested in getting involved should contact Klein at Raeanne.klein.09@students.dwu.edu or dwac@dwu.edu. The club can provide equipment and has certified archery instructors available.
