MITCHELL, S.D. – In his third season as head coach of the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team, Shane Murphy will have a whole new supporting cast surrounding him at practice and on the bench for games starting in the 2012-13 season.
Tim Weidenbach will serve as the Tiger men’s assistant coach, Jacob Brandl is DWU’s new graduate assistant coach and former men’s basketball player German Madueno returns for a third season with the Tigers, this time as a student assistant coach.
Weidenbach is a familiar name to local basketball fans, as he has spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Parkston High School. In the past five seasons, he has helped guide the Trojans to a 100-15 record and a runner-up finish at the Class A state tournament in 2012. Parkston won 184 games, 12 conference titles, seven district titles and went to state twice in his 10 seasons with the programs.
Prior to joining the Parkston staff, Weidenbach spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Sioux Falls Skyforce – an NBA Development League team – as well as four seasons as an assistant at Augsburg College, two seasons at Sheridan College and two seasons at the University of South Dakota as an assistant while Murphy was a player.
Brandl comes to DWU after two seasons as a student assistant coach at Midland University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in May. He played college basketball for two seasons at Dana College before the school closed, and played his first two seasons at North Platte Community College. At Dana, Brandl – a North Platte, Neb., native – set the school record for 3-pointers made and is in the top seven all time in total threes made with 138.
Madueno played for two seasons under Murphy at Dakota Wesleyan, but spent the last half of his senior year on the bench after suffering a season-ending injury in 2011-12. As a junior, he finished fourth on the team in scoring with an average 8.7 points per game. Prior to joining the Tigers, the Woodland, Calif., native played two seasons at American River College.
The Tiger men start the 2012-13 season at home with their annual Fulton State Bank Classic Nov. 2-3. DWU hosts Mayville State at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, and Oglala Lakota at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. The Tigers start Great Plains Athletic Conference play Saturday, Nov. 17, against Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa.
