MITCHELL, S.D. – Practice hasn’t even started yet for the 2012-13 Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team, but head coach Jason Christensen already has two key players signed for the 2013-14 season.
Christensen, who enters his third season with the program this fall, announced in June that Parkston High School standout Erica Herrold will join the Tigers as a freshman in 2013. Earlier this month, Christensen added a second name to the 2013-14 roster.
Mitchell native Kristin Sabers has signed to join the DWU women’s basketball program starting in the 2013-14 season. The 6-foot forward has one season left at Mitchell High School and will join the Tigers with five seasons of varsity high school basketball under her belt.
Sabers has been a part of the varsity Kernel squad since her eighth grade year. As a freshman she averaged 10 points and six rebounds per game and as a sophomore she averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game for coach Wes Morgan.
In her junior season, Sabers averaged 8.5 points and five rebounds per game and helped Mitchell to a 24-1 overall record and the Class AA state title. She is a four-time All-Eastern South Dakota Conference selection, and was named the MVP at the DWU Classic in 2011.
“Kristin is a well-rounded athlete that comes from a sports-minded family,” Christensen said. “She’s a kid that can play in the paint or on the three-point line, and we’re very excited to have her as a part of the Tiger basketball family.”
As well as being one of the key players for the Kernel basketball team, Sabers is also a standout golfer at Mitchell High School. She took third at the Class AA state tournament as a junior in 2012 and tied for eighth as a sophomore. She has been a part of the varsity golf team since her seventh-grade year.
Sabers and Herrold are Christensen’s first signees for the 2013-14 season. Dakota Wesleyan starts the 2012-13 season Monday, Oct. 29, when it travels to Laramie, Wyo., for an exhibition game against the University of Wyoming. The Tigers start the regular season when they host the DWU Corn Palace Classic Nov. 2-3.
