MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball hosted the first of its two home tournaments this past weekend during the six-team DWU Labor Day Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. The Tigers won their first game of the tournament Friday afternoon, but lost the next three to finish the weekend 1-3 overall.
Dakota Wesleyan (2-6) started the tournament with a 3-0 win over York College. The Tigers won 25-16, 25-16 and 25-15. Dani Bird paced the team with 14 kills and Rachel Tinklenberg added eight. Bri Jung had 28 assists and Maggie Stehly finished with eight digs.
Friday night, the Tigers played three close sets against Jamestown College, but lost 3-0. The Jimmies won 26-24, 29-27 and 25-14. Sam Sandau and Tinklenberg each had 10 kills and Bird finished with nine. Stehly had 21 digs, Bird added 11 and Katie Lindow chipped in with 10. Jung had 29 assists.
Saturday morning, Dakota Wesleyan picked up a close win against Mayville State in the first set, but the Comets took the next three to beat the Tigers 23-25, 25-8, 25-22 and 25-17. Bird had 14 kills and Tinklenberg added 10. Jung had 40 assists and 10 digs and Stehly had 12 digs.
The Tigers wrapped up the weekend with a match against in-state rival University of Sioux Falls. The Cougars used a high-powered offense to beat DWU 25-13, 25-18 and 25-18. Bird had eight kills and Jung had 17 assists for Dakota Wesleyan and Stehly had 10 digs.
Dakota Wesleyan is on the road Wednesday, Sept. 5, when it travels to take on the Cougars in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Tigers are back at home Friday, Sept. 7, and Saturday, Sept. 8, when they host the DWU Corn Palace Classic.
