MITCHELL, S.D. – It didn’t take Dakota Wesleyan University freshman Lauren Fitts long to find her stride with the Tiger women’s golf program.
The first tournament of Fitts’ college career was the first Great Plains Athletic Conference qualifier of the season, and the Brookings, S.D., native led the Tigers to a first-place finish by tying for first in the individual standings. For her performance at the conference qualifier, she has been named the league’s co-Women’s Golfer-of-the-Week, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.
Fitts shares the honor with Northwestern College sophomore Emma Wynja. Both golfers shot an 83 at the qualifier despite windy conditions at Landsmeer in Orange City, Iowa.
Fitts carded a 41 on the front nine at the qualifier and shot a 42 on the back nine to card an 83 for the tournament. She and Wynja finished two strokes ahead of Northwestern’s Taylor Kline, who took third with an 85.
Earlier this week, Fitts tied for sixth at the two-day Nebraska Wesleyan Invite and was part of the DWU squad that set 18- and 36-hole team scoring records.
Fitts and the Tigers – who took second at the two-day Nebraska Wesleyan Invite Tuesday – are back in action Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22, at their annual DWU Palace City Classic. Friday’s action will take place at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell and Saturday’s round will be played at Wild Oak Golf Club.
