HASTINGS, Neb. – Junior Austin Hieb recorded a fifth-place finish to pace the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team at the Hastings College Swan Song Fall Invite Monday afternoon in Hastings, Neb. The Tigers took fourth at the two-round, one-day tournament, played at Riverside and Lochland in Grand Island and Hastings, Neb.
Dakota Wesleyan shot a first-round score of 307, and took 11 strokes off that score for a 296 in the second round of the day. The Tigers finished with a two-round total of 603 and finished 10 strokes behind the University of Nebraska-Kearney JV team, which took third with a 593. The University of Nebraska-Kearny varsity squad won the event with a 585 and Bethany College (Kan.) finished second with a 588.
The Tigers were the top Great Plains Athletic Conference finisher at the tournament. Doane College finished sixth with a 612, Midland University took seventh with a 630 and Hastings College tied for eighth with the DWU JV team. Both squads shot 632s.
Hieb carded a 145 to finish a single stroke out of fourth in the individual race. He shot a 73 in the first round and a 72 in the back to finish one stroke behind Bethany’s Jose Lelode Larrea, who took fourth with a 144. Mac Young tied for seventh with a 147 after carding a 77 and a 70. Also for the Tiger varsity squad, Josh Korn finished 26th with a 155 (78, 77), Tyler Burr tied for 27th with a 156 (79, 77) and Kyle Higgins shot a 161 and tied for 40th (82, 79).
Carson Moore led the Tiger JV team with a 149. He shot a 78 in the first round and a 71 in the second and tied for 11th. Travis Johnson shot a 153 and tied for 21st (79, 74), Travis Olsen shot a 164 and tied for 48th (82, 82), Broderick Baker tied for 55th with a 168 (81, 87) and Anthony Husher tied for 63rd with a 173 (88, 85).
The DWU men are back off until Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa, for the second GPAC Qualifier of the fall season. The qualifier, hosted by Morningside College, will be played at Green Valley.
