MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team added a third signee for the 2013-14 school year recently when Mitchell native Emily Sudbeck signed to join the program.
Sudbeck joins current Mitchell High School teammate Krista Huber and Corvallis, Mont., native Miquela Kriskovich as the Tigers’ first three signees for the 2013-14 season.
Sudbeck joins the DWU softball program after three seasons with the Kernel varsity squad. The 6-foot-3 center fielder and shortstop hit five home runs in 2011 and had a .600 slugging percentage and earned Class AA All-State honors. She earned the team’s Golden Glove award as a junior in 2011 and was also named the Kernels’ offensive MVP.
Sudbeck also ran track for a year and was part of the sixth-place 3,200-meter relay team at the Class AA state meet. She plans to major in nursing at Dakota Wesleyan.
“Emily is another local player we felt could help us with her speed and athleticism,” second-year head coach Ed Kieff said. “She is very fast and is learning to slap. When she puts the ball in play, she is a difficult out.
“As the third member of the 2013 class to sign with a high GPA, we are very pleased with her decision. We feel fortunate to sign a player of Emily’s caliber.”
The Tiger softball team starts the 2013 spring season with a spring break trip to California March 4-11. Dakota Wesleyan is scheduled to play its first home game March 19 against Jamestown College.
