Tiger men take sixth at first GPAC Qualifier

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team finished sixth at the first Great Plains Athletic Conference qualifier of the season, held Thursday afternoon at Landsmeer in Orange City, Iowa.

The Tigers carded a 309 and finished three strokes behind Dordt College, which took fifth with a 306. Host-school Northwestern College won the event with a 282 and Nebraska Wesleyan University took second with a 291. Morningside College shot a 296 and took third and Midland University finished fourth with a 302.

Freshman Tyler Burr tied for ninth to lead the Tigers. He shot a 38 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine and carded a 74. Josh Korn also finished in the top 20 for Dakota Wesleyan. He shot a 76 (36, 40) and tied for 17th. Travis Johnson tied for 31st with a 79 (35, 44), Austin Hieb shot an 80 and tied for 36th (39, 41) and Anthony Husher rounded out the Tigers’ top five with an 83 and tied for 42nd (43, 40).

The Red Raiders recorded three top-three finishes in the individual race. Jay Monahan won the event with a 67, Neil Malenke took second with a 70 and Ryan Kiewiet tied for third with a 71.

Dakota Wesleyan is back in action Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 17-18, at the a tournament hosted by Doane College at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, Neb.
