SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University cross country team kicked off the 2012 season under the lights Friday night at the Augustana Twilight Meet in Sioux Falls, S.D.
In the first collegiate race of her career, freshman Haley Brunke paced the Tiger women with a 31st-place finish. She ran the course in 18:37.98. Freshman Skylar Forgey was the next-best finisher for DWU. She took 54th in 19:34.66. Also for Dakota Wesleyan, freshman Nicole Court-Menendez took 79th in 20:24.39, Heather Banister finished 95th in 21:26.72 and Jaime Geho took 98th in 21:34.86. Augustana’s Runa Falch won the race in 16:26.91.
Sophomore Trace Tjeerdsma was the top finisher for the Dakota Wesleyan men. He completed the race in 96th with a time of 22:19.35. Teammate Justin Brueggeman took 97th in 22:23.58 and Andrew Hernandez was right behind in 98th in 22:29.28.
David Elliott took 100th in 22:37.68, Jeff Sahli finished 104th in 22:41.52 and Mike Claar finished in 23:05.67 and took 116th. Augustana’s Paul Yak won the race in 19:21.98. The Vikings swept the top six individual spots.
The Tigers have a week off before they are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Woody Greeno Invite in Lincoln, Neb. Dakota Wesleyan hosts the DWU Invitational Saturday, Sept. 29, at Wild Oak Golf Club in Mitchell, S.D.
