MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team picked up its fourth win of the season Wednesday night when it beat in-state rival Dakota State University 3-2 in a nonconference match in Madison, S.D.
The Tigers went up 2-1 on the Trojans before Dakota State won a close fourth set, and Dakota Wesleyan held on to win a close fifth set. The Tigers won by scores on 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 19-17.
Sophomore Dani Bird paced Dakota Wesleyan with 24 kills Wednesday night. She also had 15 digs and four block assists. Elizabeth Mahsem added 14 kills and five block assists and Sarah Kruse chipped in with 12 kills.
Bri Jung had 46 set assists and Kelli Swenson added 11. Jung also had 19 digs. Katie Lindow led the team with 24 digs.
Kristen DiPaola led all hitters with 28 kills for Dakota State and Allison Thielsen added 11. Stacey Schuller had 43 assists and Mandi Atkins finished with 22 digs.
Dakota Wesleyan is now 4-14 overall and is on the road for a two-game North Dakota road trip this weekend. The Tigers play Jamestown College Saturday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. in Jamestown, N.D., and Valley City State University at 3 p.m. Sunday. Dakota Wesleyan returns home Friday, Oct. 5, when it hosts Jamestown College at 7 p.m. at the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center.
