LINCOLN, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golf team set two school records at the Nebraska Wesleyan University Invite held Sunday and Monday, Sept. 16-17, in Lincoln, Neb.
Sunday afternoon at Mahoney Golf Course, DWU shot a 307 to set a new 18-hole team record, and the Tigers wrapped up the tournament with a two-day total of 639 – a new 36-hole team record Monday afternoon. Dakota Wesleyan finished second in the 11-team field.
The previous 18-hole record was a 311, set in 2004 at Moccasin Creek in Aberdeen, S.D. The 36-hole team record was 650, set at Green Valley Golf Course in Sioux City, Iowa, in 2005. Chelsea Burback, Jenna Winckler, Lauren Fitts, Talia Peters and Natalie Turner combined to set the new record. The group shot a 307 Sunday and a 332 in Monday’s second round for a 639.
Iowa Western Community College won the event with a 630. The Tigers were in first after day one with their 307, but Iowa Western carded a 311 Monday to come back for the win. Park University took third with a 686, St. Mary’s (Neb.) took fourth with a 694 and Briar Cliff rounded out the top five with a 706.
Individually, Burback paced the Tigers with a third-place finish. Burback was in first after the first round after shooting a 72, and carded an 82 Monday for a two-round total of 154 to take third. She was one of four Tigers to finish in the top 10. Winckler took fifth, Fitts tied for sixth and Peters tied for 10th. All five Tigers finished in the top 20 as Turner took 17th.
Winckler shot a 78 Sunday and an 81 Monday to finish with a 159. Fitts, who won the first Great Plains Athletic Conference qualifier of the year last week, shot a 78 in the first round and an 82 Monday to finish with a two-round total of 160. Peters finished with a 166 (79, 87) and Turner shot a two-round total of 170 (81, 89).
Dakota Wesleyan returns to action Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22, when it hosts its annual DWU Palace City Classic. The first round is Friday afternoon at Lakeview Golf Course and the tournament concludes Saturday afternoon at Wild Oak Golf Club in Mitchell.
