SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team took one set from Morningside College, and looked like it was going to push the match to five sets, but the Mustangs eventually won a tightly contested fourth set and beat DWU 3-1 Wednesday night in Sioux City, Iowa.
After losing 25-19 in the first set, Dakota Wesleyan came back and held off Morningside for a 25-23 win in the second set. The Mustangs won the third set 25-18, and the Tigers hung close, but Morningside came away with a 26-24 win in the fourth set to pick up the Great Plains Athletic Conference victory.
Rachel Tinklenberg paced Dakota Wesleyan with 11 kills. Dani Bird added nine and Sammy Fluck and Elizabeth Mahsem each finished with eight. Sarah Kruse also had seven kills. Bri Jung had 39 assists and 11 digs, and Bird led the DWU defense with 12 digs. Maggie Stehly also had 11 digs and Stacie Brinker chipped in with 10.
Anastasia Ott led all hitters with 17 kills for the Mustangs (10-6, 1-2). Kecia Verburg added 15 and Gabi French finished with 12 kills. Melissa Mounts had 47 assists and Maggie Vondrak had 15 kills.
Dakota Wesleyan is now 3-12 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC. The Tigers are on the road again Saturday, Sept. 22, when they travel to Seward, Neb., to take on Concordia University. DWU is back at home Tuesday, Sept. 25, when it hosts Mount Marty College at 7:30 p.m. at the Corn Palace.
