LINCOLN, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golf team moved up one place Tuesday at the NAIA National Preview Tournament to finish in seventh place. The Tigers shot a 336 in Monday’s first round and again Tuesday in the second and final round to take seventh out of 22 teams at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, Neb.
DWU, which was in eighth after the first round, shot a two-round total of 672 at the tournament, hosted by Doane College. Lubbock Christian University ran away with the team title with a 592. LCU shot a 302 Monday and a 290 Tuesday. William Woods took second with a 616 and Wayland Baptist finished third with a 636. Morningside College was the next-best Great Plains Athletic Conference finisher at the event. The Mustangs finished 12th with a 720.
Individually, freshman Lauren Fitts paced the Tigers with a 16th-place finish. She was in 30th Monday after shooting an 84, but carded a 75 Tuesday to finish with a 159. She finished one stroke out of 15th. Sophomore Jenna Winckler also recorded a top-25 finish. She finished 24th with a 165 (80, 85).
Also for Dakota Wesleyan, junior Chelsea Burback tied for 33rd with a 170 (83, 87); Talia Peters finished 47th with a 178 (89, 89) and Natalie Turner tied for 56th with a 182 (90, 92).
Lubbock Christian swept the top two spots in the individual race. Sinae Montoya shot a two-under 140 to win the event and teammate Anna Schopp shot a 145 to take second. Montoya shot a 66 Tuesday and became the first player to score under par in a round in a meet hosted by Doane at Wilderness Ridge.
Dakota Wesleyan is off until Wednesday, Oct. 3, when it travels back to Lincoln for the second GPAC Qualifier of the 2012 fall season. The Tigers hold a slim lead in the team race after the first qualifier, and Fitts is tied for first in the individual race.
