Tigers open GPAC season with loss to Dordt

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team started its Great Plains Athletic Conference season with a three-set loss to Dordt College Wednesday night at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The Defenders defeated the Tigers 25-18, 25-16, 25-21. Dakota Wesleyan is now 3-11 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Dordt improves to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC.

Junior Rachel Tinklenberg paced the Tiger offense with eight kills. Elizabeth Mahsem and Sam Sandau each chipped in with seven kills and Sammy Fluck had four. Bri Jung had 25 assists and Maggie Stehly paced the Tiger defense with eight digs. Dani Bird and Mahsem each had two block assists.

Lindsey Floen led all hitters with 11 kills for the Defenders and Danae Geels added seven. Kayla Gesink had 28 assists and Kayla Broekhuis finished with 11 digs. Jenna Horstman led Dordt at the net with six block assists.

The Tigers are on the road for two GPAC games before returning home to face Mount Marty College on Sept. 25 at the Corn Palace. DWU plays Morningside College Sept. 19 in Sioux City, Iowa, then travels to Seward, Neb., to take on Concordia University on Sept. 22.
