MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team inked its first recruit for the 2013-14 season earlier this week when head coach Adam Anderson announced the signing of Howard High School standout Cal Wiese.
Wiese, a Fedora, S.D., native, is currently in his senior season with the Tigers and is looking to end his prep career with a fourth straight top-three finish at the Class B state golf tournament this spring. After a 23rd-place finish as an eighth-grader in 2009, Wiese has finished in the top three each of the last three seasons. He took third as a freshman in 2010, won the Class B individual title as a sophomore in 2011 and took second as a junior in 2012. He was tied with Freeman’s Arron Lickteig, but lost in a sudden death playoff.
Wiese has been named to the Class B All-Tournament team his freshman through junior seasons, and was named his team’s MVP each season from 2008 to 2012. He won the individual region title as an eighth grader and a freshman and took second as a sophomore and junior, and won the Big East Conference meet in 2012.
Wiese, who helped the Tigers to the Region 2B title in 2011 and a conference title in 2012, also lettered four times in basketball and three in football. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and plans to major in biochemistry at Dakota Wesleyan.
“I am very excited by Cal’s decision to join our program,” Anderson said. “He is one of the best junior golfers in the state for this year’s graduating class, and I look forward to having him be an important part of our men’s team.
“Cal is a very strong leader both on and off the golf course, as evidenced by both his golfing resume and excellence in the classroom.”
The Tiger men recently finished fourth at the Hastings College Swan Song Invite. DWU is back in action Wednesday, Oct. 10, when it travels to Sioux City, Iowa, for the second Great Plains Athletic Conference qualifier of the fall season.
