MITCHELL, S.D. – For the second time this season, Dakota Wesleyan University freshman Lauren Fitts is the Great Plains Athletic Conference Women’s Golfer-of-the-Week, it was announced by the league late Wednesday night.
Fitts’ second weekly honor comes after winning the GPAC Qualifier No. 2 Oct. 3 in Lincoln, Neb. She tied for first at the first qualifier of the year – which was also the first tournament of her collegiate golf career – and won the second qualifier by a single stroke. She shot a 79 to beat out Briar Cliff’s Dawn Chapman, who took second with an 80.
The Brookings, S.D., native – who won the first weekly GPAC honor of her career after the first conference qualifier – is alone in first in the individual conference race heading into the spring portion of the 2012-13 schedule. Fitts has a two-round total of 162 and is six strokes ahead of teammate Chelsea Burback and Chapman, who are tied for second with 168s.
Fitts’ win last week also helped the Tiger women extend their lead in the team race. Dakota Wesleyan was two strokes ahead of Northwestern College after the first qualifier, but increased its lead to 29 after the second qualifier. The Tigers are in first with a 113 and Northwestern is second with a 142.
Dakota Wesleyan wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule earlier this week at the OCU Stars Fall Classic in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Tigers took ninth at a meet that featured some of the top-10 teams in the NAIA.
