MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan University junior Austin Hieb earned the first weekly Great Plains Athletic Conference honor of his career this week after leading the Tiger men’s golf team at the Hastings College Fall Invite on Sept. 24.
Hieb, an Aberdeen, S.D., native, finished fifth to lead Dakota Wesleyan to a fourth-place finish at the invite, which included several GPAC schools and the University of Nebraska-Kearney varsity and JV squads. For his strong finish, Hieb has been named the league’s Golfer-of-the-Week, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.
Hieb finished one stroke over par with a 145 at the two-round tournament in Grand Island and Hastings, Neb. He shot a one-over 73 in the first round at Riverside in Grand Island, then shot an even-par 72 at Lochland and Hastings in the second round.
Not only did Hieb’s fifth-place finish lead the Tiger men’s team, he was also the top GPAC finisher at the meet. Midland’s Brady Vancura and DWU’s Mac Young both tied for seventh with 147s.
This marked Hieb’s first top-five finish of the year. His previous best so far in the 2012-13 season was a tie for 14th at the Tigers’ home Palace City Classic Sept. 21-22.
Hieb and the Tigers are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa, for the second GPAC qualifier of the season. DWU took sixth at the first qualifier.
