SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team stayed at sixth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference team standings after tying for fourth at the second league qualifier of the season Wednesday afternoon at Green Valley Golf Course in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Tigers shot a 312 and tied for fourth with Midland University in the second and final qualifier of the fall portion of the 2012-13 season. The final two qualifiers will be held in the spring. Northwestern College won the event with a 292 and Morningside College took second with a 296. Nebraska Wesleyan University rounded out the top three with a 300.
Dakota Wesleyan is in sixth heading into the two spring qualifiers. The Tigers have a two-round score of 621, and are two strokes behind fifth-place Dordt College, which has a 619. Northwestern leads the overall team race with a 574, and is 17 strokes ahead of Nebraska Wesleyan, which has a 591. Morningside is third with a 592.
Three golfers finished in the top 25 individually for Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon. Austin Hieb paced the Tigers with a 75. He shot a 41 on the front nine and a 34 on the back and tied for eighth. Mac Young tied for 14th with a 76. He shot a 38 on the front and back nine. Travis Johnson also finished in the top 25 for the Tigers. He shot a 79 (40-39) and tied for 24th. Also for Dakota Wesleyan, Tyler Burr tied for 36th with an 82 (40, 42) and Josh Korn tied for 45th with an 84 (40, 44).
Northwestern’s Kyle Stanek and Michael Dykema, Morningside’s Nathan Zimmerman and Nebraska Wesleyan’s Rory Doll all tied for first with 72s.
Hieb is tied for 14th in the individual conference standings with a 155. He is two strokes behind Midland’s Brady Vankura, who is 13th with a 153. Burr is tied for 17th with a 156, Johnson is in 27th with a 158 and Korn is tied for 30th with a 160. Northwestern’s Jay Monahan is first with a 142 and teammate Nathan Malenke is second with a 143.
The Tigers host Hastings College in the TigBro Cup Saturday, Oct. 13, at Wild Oak Golf Club. The Tigers’ last tournament of the fall season is Oct. 15-16 at the NAIA Midwest Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
