MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan University senior Bo LaCroix led the Tiger men’s basketball team to a pair of wins over the weekend at the Fulton State Bank Classic. LaCroix led the team in scoring twice in a 61-55 win over Mayville State University Friday and a 107-43 win against Oglala Lakota College Saturday night at the Corn Palace.
After leading by as many as five in the second half Friday against Mayville State, the Tigers’ lead was cut to two, 54-52, with 3:14 left to play. A single free throw by Luke Bamberg and a pair of free throws by LaCroix put DWU up by five, 57-52, with 1:50 remaining, and DWU hit four free throws in the final minute of the game to help seal the win.
The Comets (3-1) lead early against Dakota Wesleyan, but layups by Jalen Voss and Bamberg put the Tigers up 11-8 with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. The Comets took the lead back late in the half, but free throws by Bamberg and layups by LaCroix and Aireus Stephenson made it 25-20 DWU with seven seconds left in the half. Steven Ivory Jr. hit a three at the buzzer for Mayville to make it a two-point game, and Adam Edwards hit a three early in the second to put the Comets up.
LaCroix finished with 16 points and five rebounds to lead DWU against Mayville. Bamberg and Stephenson each finished with 13 points and Voss had nine rebounds and eight points. The Tigers shot 41.4 percent from the field and went 12-for-21 from the line. Ivory finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for Mayville, which shot 36.4 percent from the field and went 8-for-15 from the line. DWU out-rebounded the Comets 44-34.
Saturday against Oglala, the Tigers took an early lead and never looked back. DWU led by 10, 18-8, just over five minutes into the game, and extended its lead to 18, 33-15, with 9:05 left in the first half. Dakota Wesleyan led 57-25 at halftime and outscored the Bravehearts 50-18 in the second half.
LaCroix finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers. Voss added 13 points and 10 rebounds, Stephenson had 12 points and Mike Lee and Carde Pennington each added 10 points Bamberg had six assists and Stephen Lee and Jade Miller each had eight rebounds. Dakota Wesleyan shot just under 59 percent from the field, went 15-for-30 from the line and had 55 rebounds.
Willis Zephier had 15 points to pace Oglala Lakota and Steven Pourier Jr. added 11. Brice Hornbeck had seven rebounds. Oglala shot 27 percent from the field, went 9-for-10 from the line and had 25 rebounds.
Dakota Wesleyan hosts York College Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. in a nonconference game at the Corn Palace.
