MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Six members of the Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team placed at the Auggie-Brute Open Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis, Minn. The Auggie-Brute, hosted by Augsburg College, is one of the biggest small-college wrestling tournaments in the Midwest, and features wrestlers from all levels of college wrestling.
Freshman Caleb Heiberger and sophomore Kyle Gerlach both won consolation championships for the Tigers. Heiberger went 3-1 in the 157-pound Gold Division to win the consolation title. He pinned his opponent in 4:51 to win in his final match of the day. Gerlach went 3-1 in the 165-pound Silver Division and won a 3-0 decision in the consolation championship match.
Sophomore Trever DeVestern went 2-1 and took fifth in the 157-pound Gold Division. He won by pin in 2:35 in the fifth-place match. Ryan Roach also competed in the gold division at 165 pounds and took sixth. He went 1-2 on the day. Also placing for Dakota Wesleyan were Ross Hoksbergen and Mito Mendivil. Hoksbergen took fourth and went 1-2 in the 197-pound Silver Division and Mendivil went 1-2 and took third in the 157-pound Bronze Division.
Freshman Jade Hoisington competed in the gold division at 197 pounds for Dakota Wesleyan and went 1-2 Saturday afternoon. Karl Bell went 1-2 in the 141-pound Silver Division, and Dusty Paulsen went 1-2 in the silver division at 157 pounds. Dominic Smothers and Jacob Devine both went 1-2 in the 165-pound Silver division. Brook Woehl competed in the 149-pound Bronze Division and went 1-2
The Tigers wrestle their first Great Plains Athletic Conference dual of the year Thursday, Nov. 29, when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on Morningside College. DWU is back at home on Dec. 5 when it hosts Northern State University in a nonconference dual.
