HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University soccer team held the 25th-ranked team in the NAIA to a single goal for the first 80 minutes of play, but gave up two late goals and lost 3-0 to Hastings College Thursday night in a Great Plains Athletic Conference quarterfinal game in Hastings, Neb.
The eighth-seeded Tigers end their season 6-11-2 while Hastings – the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament – improves to 13-6 and moves on to the tournament semifinals.
The game was scoreless at halftime, and DWU goalie Alex Nelson made six first-half saves to keep it that way. Jordan Green scored the Broncos’ first goal of the game on a penalty kick just under three minutes into the second half, and Hastings’ lead was 1-0 heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Green scored again off an assist from Aaron Mulgrue at 81:41, and added his third goal of the game less than four minutes later, again off an assist from Mulgrue.
Hastings had 26 shots to DWU’s four, including a 12-2 margin in shots on goal. Nelson finished with nine saves for Dakota Wesleyan.
Thursday’s game marked the final game in a Tiger uniform for DWU’s six seniors. Nick Sterling, Austin Munyon, Drew Joachim, Aaron Foss and Jose Lopez have all been with the Tigers for four years, and Hugo Gonzalez graduates after three years with the DWU soccer program.
