SIBLEY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team wrestled its first Great Plains Athletic Conference dual of the season Thursday night and came up just short against No. 5 Morningside College. The Tigers, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, fell 24-13 to the Mustangs at a match wrestled at Sibley High School in Sibley, Iowa.
Dakota Wesleyan (2-1) was in position to be one point behind the Mustangs heading into the final match of the night as Kyle Gerlach held a 3-2 lead over his opponent at 165 pounds late in the third period. But Chad Morehead got a reversal in the final second of the match to come back for a 4-3 win and give Morningside a 20-13 lead with a single match to go.
The Mustangs dominated the heavy weights, picking up major decisions at 174 and 184 pounds and decisions at 197 pounds and heavyweight, but the Tigers fared well in the lighter weights. Richard Rios picked up DWU’ s first win of the night when he beat Nathan Ryan 10-3 at 133 pounds, and Dusty Paulsen won a 12-3 major decision over Nate Taylor at 149 pounds.
Sophomore Trever DeVestern improved to 9-1 on the season with a pin in 2:19 against Jordan Langley at 157 pounds. Morningside won a major decision at 125 pounds and a 6-4 decision at 141 pounds.
The Tigers are back at home Wednesday, Dec. 5, when they host Northern State University in a nonconference dual at 7 p.m. in the Christen Family Wellness Center on the DWU campus.
