MITCHELL, S.D. – With just over 10 minutes to play against York College, the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team led by 15 points and looked set to improve to 3-0 on the season.
But York went on a run, took advantage of Tiger turnovers and hit a three-point shot late to come away with a 98-84 win at the Corn Palace Wednesday in a nonconference game. The Panthers improved to 3-1 while Dakota Wesleyan is now 2-1.
The Tigers led by 15, 76-61, with 10:13 left to play after back-to-back 3-pointers by Aireus Stephenson and Carde Pennington. But York went on a 14-2 run to cut the lead to three, 78-75, with 8:30 to play. York took an 83-82 lead with 5:27 left in the game on back-to-back layups by Thadd Carmall and Marcus Johnson, but Stephenson scored on a jumper and Jalen Voss hit two layups to put DWU up four, 89-85, with 3:02 left.
York tied the game and took the lead on a three by Desmond Strickland with 1:29 left, but Kris Menning hit a three with 1:10 remaining to put DWU up 94-92. Johnson tied the game on a layup with 50 seconds to play, and Menning missed a second 3-pointer and the Panthers got the rebound and Strickland hit a three with second seconds left in the game to put York up 97-74.
Stephenson missed a free-throw attempt after being fouled, and Alec Monaghan hit a single free throw with one second remaining to seal the win.
The game was close early, but Dakota Wesleyan led much of the first half. The Tigers led by as much as six late in the half, but York put together a run and grabbed a 39-36 lead with 1:53 left in the first. The game was tied at 41 at halftime.
After a back-and-forth start to the second half, the Tigers went on a 19-5 run that spanned nearly three minutes to go up 76-61 with 10:13 left in the game.
Stephenson finished with 24 points and seven assists to pace Dakota Wesleyan, which shot 52.8 percent from the field and hit seven 3-pointers. Voss added 20 points and 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Bo LaCroix finished with 16 points and nine rebounds and Pennington added 12 points. DWU went 11-for-18 from the line and had 48 rebounds.
Johnson led all scorers with 29 points on 10-for-11 shooting from the field and a 9-for-11 mark from the line for York. Carmall finished with 21 points, Strickland added 19 points, including five 3-pointers and Dylan Brewer had 17 points. Carmall also had six rebounds and Brewer had four assists. The Panthers shot 52.2 percent from the field, hit eight 3-pointers and had 26 rebounds.
Dakota Wesleyan is on the road for the first time this season Saturday, Nov. 10, when it travels to Madison, S.D., to take on Dakota State University at 4 p.m.
