MITCHELL, S.D. – The indoor season hasn’t even started yet for the Dakota Wesleyan University track and field team, but freshman Haley Brunke got a jump on the outdoor season over the weekend.
Brunke, a Scotland, S.D., native, qualified for the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships by meeting the “B” provisional standard at the Midland Half Marathon Saturday in Fremont, Neb.
Brunke – who was the Tigers’ top finisher at the Great Plains Athletic Conference cross country championships this fall – took fourth at the half marathon in 1:31.50. She finished one second behind the third-place runner.
The 2013 outdoor national championships are hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University May 24-26 in Marion, Ind. Dakota Wesleyan opens the outdoor portion of its schedule Jan. 12 when it travels to Sioux Center, Iowa, for the Dordt College Invite.
