MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team picked up its 10th win of the year Saturday afternoon when it beat Doane College 81-69 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference game at the Corn Palace.
DWU is now 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the GPAC. Doane fell to 5-9 overall and is winless in the league at 0-7.
After a slow start by both teams, Doane went up two, 10-8, with just under six minutes gone, but Elizabeth Lamb hit two threes and Celeste Beck hit a 3-pointer to put Dakota Wesleyan up seven, 19-12, with 12:30 left in the first half. Back-to-back baskets by Katie Johnson a few minutes later put DWU up nine, 23-14, with 10:51 left in the half, but Doane went on an 11-3 run to make it a one-point game, 26-25.
A three by Beck pushed the lead back to six, 37-31, with 2:24 left in the half, and Beck hit a layup with five seconds left in the half to give DWU a 41-36 lead heading into halftime.
Doane outscored the Tigers 9-5 to start the second half and make it a one-point game, 46-45, with 15:49 left to play. DWU pushed its lead back to six, but Doane cut it down to two twice more before Dakota Wesleyan dug in. Doane made it a two-point game, 54-52, with 10:26 to play, but the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to make it a 10-point game with 5:44 left to play. Doane cut into the lead, but another three by Lamb made it 68-58 with three minutes to play, and DWU was able to hold on for the win.
Kim Johnson led the Tigers with 23 points and nine rebounds. Lamb finished with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Katie Johnson added 13 points and Beck finished with 11 points Taylor Piper had five assists. DWU shot 52 percent from the field, went 22-for-29 from the line and had 29 rebounds and 10 turnovers.
Hannah Dostal finished with 23 points to pace Doane. Heather Broman added 17 points and Cali Bellar finished with 10. Shelbi Bittinger had seven rebounds and Brittany Luettel had four assists. Doane shot 45.3 percent from the field, went 14-for-19 from the line and had 30 rebounds and 15 turnovers.
DWU is on the road Thursday and Friday, Dec. 20 and 21, when they play a pair of nonconference games in the Wisconsin Dells. The Tigers play Ashford University at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 20 and Lakeland College at 5 p.m. on Dec. 21.
