MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team dropped a nonconference dual meet to Northern State University Wednesday night at the Christen Family Wellness Center on the DWU campus. Northern defeated the Tigers 27-9.
The Wolves – who are receiving votes in the NCAA Division II – picked up a pin at 125 pounds to start the match, but Dakota Wesleyan answered with a pair of decision to tie the score at five three matches in. Richard Rios won a 10-4 decision over Tyler Frost at 133 pounds and Karl Bell picked up his third win of the year when he won a 7-3 decision over Ian Muirhead at 141 pounds.
Northern State won three straight decisions at 149, 157 and 165 pounds before the Tigers were able to score again. Tyler Sarringar won a 13-3 major decision over Anthony Navarro at 174 pounds to get DWU back within five, 14-9, but those were the last points the Tigers scored.
The Wolves got a pin at 184 pounds, a decision and 197 pounds and Matt Meuleners – the No. 1 heavyweight in the NCAA Division II – won a major decision over Eric Gruis to cap off the scoring.
Dakota Wesleyan, which moved up to No. 17 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, is now 2-2 in dual meets. The Tigers are back in action Friday, Dec. 7, when they travel to Jackson, Minn., for a quadrangular with Northwestern College, Augustana College and the Air Force Academy.
