Tiger men’s golf adds two Black Hills standouts

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team added a pair of standouts from the Black Hills area to its 2013-14 roster, head coach Adam Anderson announced Tuesday afternoon.

Jacob Palo, a Hot Springs, S.D. native, and Lead native Gabe Dirksen both signed with the Tiger men’s golf program recently and will join the team in the fall. Both had solid prep careers, and both come to DWU with ties to the college.

Dirksen, who is from the same hometown as Tiger assistant coach Tyler Evenson and former DWU All-American golfer Dani Bellet Everson, won five varsity letters for the Lead-Deadwood High School golf team. He took third at the Class A state golf meet as a senior and helped the Golddiggers to the Class A state team title.

Dirksen took first place at the region golf tournament and second at the conference tournament. He also lettered twice in golf and once in track. He competed on the Avera/Austad Junior Tour and won several tournaments on the tour. Dirksen, who plans to major in bio chemistry at DWU, was a member of the National Honor Society.

Palo, the younger brother of current DWU golfer Emilie Palo, joins the Tigers after earning five varsity letters for the Bison. He has several top-two finishes, and qualified for the Class A state meet as a junior. He also competed at the region tournament for five years, and played on the Avera/Austad Junior Tour for three years.

“Any time you have the opportunity to add two very smart, coachable and motivated young men to your program in the same day, is a great day,” Anderson said. “I am excited by the decision made today by both Gabe and Jacob. Both are thrilled to soon begin their collegiate athletic careers, and both will be outstanding teammates.

“Both Gabe and Jacob have supportive families who appreciate the value of the well-rounded education their sons will receive at DWU.”

The Tiger men begin the spring portion of their 2012-13 schedule March 18-19 when they travel to Winfield, Kan., for a tournament hosted by Southwestern College.
