Tiger wrestlers pick up GPAC win in Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team picked up a win in its first Great Plains Athletic Conference dual of the season Wednesday night. The Tigers, ranked No. 14 in the NAIA, beat receiving votes Hastings College 27-16 in a dual meet in Hastings, Neb.

The Broncos (0-6-2) grabbed a 6-0 lead early after winning by forfeit at 125 pounds. Richard Rios won a 9-4 decision at 133 pounds to get Dakota Wesleyan (5-4) on the board, but Blake Fruchtl beat Karl Bell by an 8-2 decision at 141 pounds to put Hastings 9-3.

Dusty Paulsen brought the Tigers within three after winning a 4-1 decision at 149 pounds, and Kyle Gerlach tied the score 9-9 with a 5-3 decision at 157 pounds. Hastings took a brief lead when Steadman Wang beat Nick Hutcheson by a 6-0 decision at 165 pounds, but Tyler Sarringar pinned his opponent in 4:03 at 174 pounds to put DWU up 15-12. Kyle Hoisington won by forfeit at 184 pounds to put the Tigers ahead 21-12 before Grant Harrill beat Ross Hoksbergen by a major decision at 197 pounds. Eric Gruis finished the night with a pin in 1:28 at heavyweight for the Tigers.

Dakota Wesleyan is back in action Saturday, Jan. 19, when it travels to Dickinson, N.D., for the Dickinson Open. The Tigers are back at home Tuesday, Jan. 22, for a GPAC dual against Briar Cliff University at 7 p.m. in the Christen Family Wellness Center on the DWU campus.
