MITCHELL, S.D. – The No. 14 Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team picked up its first dual win of 2013 Wednesday night when it defeated Buena Vista University 33-18 in a nonconference dual at the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center on the DWU campus.
The Beavers (0-2) started the night with a win by forfeit at 125 pounds, but the Tigers (4-4) got on the board at 133 pounds when Richard Rios won a 16-6 major decision over Cameron Mennenoh. Buena Vista doubled its score when Steve Gutschenritter pinned Karl Bell in 2:55 at 141 pounds, but Dusty Paulsen won a 6-4 decision against Dustin Shinkle at 149 pounds to get DWU rolling and cut the gap to 12-7.
Trever DeVestern followed with a 12-0 major decision at 157 pounds to make it a one-point match, 12-11, and Nick Hutcheson gave the Tigers the lead when he won a 15-1 major decision over Tanner Regenwether at 165 pounds. Tyler Sarringar won by forfeit at 174 pounds to put DWU up 21-12, but Brian Broll pinned Kyle Hoisington in 5:46 to make it a three-point match, 21-18, with two matches to go.
Jade Hoisington picked up a huge win for Dakota Wesleyan at 197 pounds when he pinned Jared Bronaugh in 6:50 to put the Tigers up 27-18 with one match left in the dual. He got a reversal and a near fall to go up 8-4 at the end of the first period, and got the same combination again in the second before getting his opponent on his back and earning the pin in the final seconds of the third period. Eric Gruis finished the match with a pin in 2:45 over Jacob Nelson at heavyweight for Dakota Wesleyan.
The Tigers are back on the road Saturday, Jan. 12, when they travel to Hastings, Neb., for the Hastings Open. Dakota Wesleyan is back at home Tuesday, Jan. 22, when it hosts Briar Cliff University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference dual at the Wellness Center.
