MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golf team has established a history of winning and success over the past several seasons, and head coach Adam Anderson make sure he recruits athletes that are going to continue that tradition.
Anderson’s latest recruit already has a successful history of her own, and she looks to continue that success next season at Dakota Wesleyan.
Lakeview, Texas, native April Barnett signed with the Tiger women’s golf team recently, becoming DWU’s second recruit for 2013-14, Anderson announced Thursday. Barnett won the Class 1A individual state golf title as a junior, and is looking to repeat in her senior season.
Barnett won the Texas Class 1A title by one stroke with a 161 last spring. She also helped the Memphis High School girls’ golf team to the Class 1A team title. The four-year letter winner has also been a part of a state runner-up team and the third-place team. She averaged 79 during summer tournaments through the Northern Texas Junior PGA.
Barnett, who plans to major in pre-med, is her class valedictorian and a member of the honor roll and National Honor Society.
“This was a good step in the right direction and a good fit mutually for both April and Dakota Wesleyan University,” Anderson said. “April is a class-act individual who leads by example both in the classroom and on the golf course.”
“April has a very supportive family and community and we are thrilled she will soon be part of our golf program this fall. I am excited for how she will positively impact our team and campus atmosphere.”
Barnett joins Lake Andes native Krista Winckler as the Tigers’ first two signees for the upcoming season. Dakota Wesleyan is currently first in the Great Plains Athletic Conference team standings and starts its spring season March 18-19 at a tournament hosted by Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan.
