MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team has a pair of brothers on its 2013-14 roster, and head coach Adam Anderson announced Tuesday that the women’s roster will have family ties as well.
Krista Winckler, sister of current Tiger golfer Jenna Winckler, committed to golf collegiately at Dakota Wesleyan earlier this week, Anderson announced. Krista Winckler is the Tiger women’s first commitment for the upcoming season.
Winckler joins the DWU golf program after a three-year varsity career at Andes Central High School in Lake Andes, S.D. She has qualified for the Class B state tournament twice in her varsity career, and helped the Eagles to a fifth-place team finish as a sophomore. She was also part of an Andes Central team that won the region tournament her sophomore season and took fourth her junior year.
Winckler also lettered six times in basketball and five in volleyball at Andes Central. She earned all-conference and Class B All-State honorable mention honors in volleyball and was named to the Class B All-Tournament team after helping the Eagles to a fifth-place finish this season. She also earned all-conference honors in basketball.
Winckler, who plans to major in nursing, is a member of the A honor roll, the National Honor Society and is her class salutatorian.
“I am happy that Krista has chosen Dakota Wesleyan to further her academic and athletic experience,” Anderson said. “Krista is a developing golfer who looks forward to the challenge of being a part of our top-25 NAIA golf program. She has what it takes to be a successful student-athlete, and I am anxious to see how she will do next fall.
“It will be cool to have two sisters on the team. I have not experienced that before during my eight years at DWU as a coach, so I am looking forward to it.”
Dakota Wesleyan starts the spring portion of its 2012-13 schedule March 18-19 when it travels to Winfield, Kan., for a two-day tournament hosted by Southwestern College.
