LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team started its season Monday afternoon with a pair of games against Hope International University on its spring break trip in Fullerton, Calif. The Tigers lost 2-1 and 5-4 in eight innings to Hope International.

DWU continued its trip Tuesday with a doubleheader against Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. The Tigers lost 10-2 in five innings and lost the nightcap 5-1.

Monday against HIU, DWU led 1-0 after three innings thanks to an RBI single by Vanessa Mendez. Hope scored twice in the fifth on a pair of hits to go up 2-1, and that’s where the score would stay. The score stayed tied until Hope scored on a DWU throwing error in the bottom of the eighth.

Tuesday, DWU managed just two hits in the first game loss to Biola. The Tigers scored both their runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Bovee, but never scored again. Biola scored once in the second, then added six runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. Dickson threw the first 2.1 innings. She gave up one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Uttecht threw the final two innings and took the loss, giving up nine runs on eight hits.

In the second game, Biola went up 1-0 in the second and added two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. The Tigers’ lone run came in the seventh on a fielder’s choice RBI by Uttecht. Laura Erickson, Unger and Bovee each had two hits for DWU. Dickson threw the first five innings and took the loss. She gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out three batters.
