TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team completed its sweep of NCAA Division II opponents on its spring break trip Saturday with a 4-3 win over Minot State University in its final game in Tucson, Ariz. Earlier in the week, the Tigers swept a doubleheader against Northern State University, another division two school that competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Dakota Wesleyan grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Toby Kaplan tripled and scored on a Minot error on a hit by Kirk McBreen. DWU looked poised to score another run when McBreen made it to home on a hit by Michael Lukkason, but he was thrown out at the plate for the third out.
The Tigers added another run in the seventh when Cody Silveria doubled to start the inning and advanced on a single by Christian Doyle. Silveria came around to score on an RBI single by McBreen. DWU made it 4-0 in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Tim Cusick and Erik Nockleby drew a bases loaded walk to send in another run.
The Beavers put together a run in the final inning with three runs on three hits, but Josh Wagner struck out two batters and Zac Custer earned the save by striking out the final batter of the game.
Lukkason went 3-for-5 to lead Dakota Wesleyan, which had 12 total hits. Doyle also had two hits and Nick Tadlock and Silveria both doubled. Kevin Hatcher threw the first eight innings and earned the win. He gave up two runs on just four hits and struck out eight batters.
The Tigers went 8-3 on their spring break trip and are now 10-9 overall. They look to sweet another NSIC opponent this weekend when they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on Augustana College in a pair of nine-inning games Saturday and Sunday March 16-17.
