WINFIELD, Kan. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s and women’s golf teams started the spring portion of their 2012-13 schedules with a pair of solid performances at a tournament hosted by Southwestern University in Winfield, Kan., on Monday and Tuesday.
The Tiger women took first by a single stroke and the DWU men finished third at the two-day tournament. The Tiger women took first with a 678. They shot a 333 on the first day of competition and finished eight strokes ahead of Seminole State Community College, and finished the tournament with a 345 in the second round. Seminole State shot a 338 on the second day and took second with a 679. Ottawa University finished third with a 712 and host-school Southwestern took fourth with a 716.
Individually, junior Chelsea Burback paced the Tigers with a fourth-place finish. She and teammate Lauren Fitts were tied for first after shooting 79s on the first day of the tournament, but Burback carded an 85 on the second day to finish with a two-round total of 164. Fitts finished tied for fifth with a 165 after carding an 86 in the second round. Jenna Winckler took 12th with a 173 after shooting an 85 the first day and an 88 the second, Talia Peters tied for 17th with a 177 (90, 87) and Natalie Turner finished 19th with a 179 (92, 87). Burback and Fitts were both named to the all-tournament team for finishing in the top five.
The DWU men were in fourth after the first round of the tournament, but shaved a stroke off their score and finished third with a 611. The Tigers shot a 306 in the first round and a 305 in the second. Bethany College won the tournament with a 592 and Southwestern took second with a 604.
Individually, Austin Hieb paced the Tigers with a second-place finish. He shot a 72 in the first round and a 75 in the second for a two-day total of 147. He was named to the all-tournament team. Mac Young tied for 11th with a 153 (75, 78); Tommy Anderson tied for 19th in his first tournament with Dakota Wesleyan with a 156 (81, 75); Tyler Burr tied for 21st with a 157 (80, 77) and Josh Korn shot a 160 (79, 81) and tied for 31st.
The Tiger women are back in action March 25-26 at the Bellevue University tournament in Valley, Neb. The Dakota Wesleyan men return to action April 1-2 at a tournament hosted by Grandview University in Des Moines, Iowa.
