MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team started Great Plains Athletic Conference play with a pair of losses to Northwestern College Tuesday but swept Briar Cliff in its first home game of the year Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers lost 10-2 in five innings and 6-0 to Northwestern Tuesday in Orange City, Iowa, but swept Briar Cliff 6-1 and 11-3 in five innings Wednesday at McWhirter Field at the Cadwell Park Complex in Mitchell.
Tuesday afternoon, DWU had just three hits in the first game against the Red Raiders. Northwestern scored four runs in the first and added three runs in both the second and third innings. Katie Anderus, Hailey Unger and Katie Uttecht each had a hit for the Tigers. Jill Dickson threw the first two innings and gave up seven runs on five hits with four strikeouts and took the loss. Uttecht threw the final two innings.
The Tigers had six hits in the second game, but couldn’t find a way to score. Laura Erickson and Anderus each had two hits for DWU, and Anderus had a double. Dickson threw all six innings and took the loss. She gave up six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Wednesday it was all DWU in its home debut. The Tigers got on the board in the second when Uttecht hit an RBI single and went up 2-0 in the third on an RBI single by Hailey Unger. BCU made it 2-1 in the sixth, but the Tigers used two-run doubles from Anderus and Unger to go up 6-1.
Vanessa Mendez went 3-for-3 to lead DWU. Unger went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Anderus went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Dickson threw all seven innings and gave up one run on nine hits with four strikeouts.
The Tigers led 2-0 after two innings in the second game thanks to a two-run double by Mendez. The Chargers made it 2-1 in the third, but the Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run homer by Chelsea Moody. Unger also had an RBI double. The Tigers added a single run in the fourth on an RBI single by Meghan Bovee, and ended the game early with five runs in the fifth. Uttecht had an RBI single and scored on a passed ball, the Chargers walked in a run, Snook sent in a run when she reached on an error and Kelsey Newman had an RBI single.
Erickson, Anderus and Moody each had two hits for the Tigers and Mendez, Bovee and Moody had two RBIs. Tiffany Sharp threw all five innings and gave up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts to earn the win.
DWU is back in action Thursday, April 4, when it hosts Dakota State University in a nonconference doubleheader.
