MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team extended its win streak to four games and stayed perfect at home Thursday afternoon with a pair of nonconference wins against Dakota State University at McWhirter Field in Mitchell.
The Tigers used a 10-run inning and a walkoff triple to beat the Trojans 11-10 in the first game and won the second game 14-3 in five innings thanks to a few big innings.
In the first game, neither team scored until the top of the fourth when Dakota State (8-12) scored on an RBI double. The Trojans took a 6-0 lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a five-run inning. Dakota State had three hits and took advantage of three Dakota Wesleyan errors. The Tigers, however, struck back in the bottom of the inning with 10 runs to go up 10-6.
Katie Anderus and Chelsea Moody had RBI singles, Hailey Unger had an RBI fielder’s choice, Katie Uttecht had a two-run double and Vanessa Mendez had an RBI triple in the inning. DWU also took advantage of three straight walks and one Trojan error.
Dakota State tied the game with a four-run sixth inning, and the game stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh inning. Uttecht singled to start the inning and advanced on a passed ball. She scored the game-winning run on an RBI triple by Kelsey Newman.
Moody went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Lindy Snook had two hits for the Tigers, who had 12 total hits. Mendez, Newman and Uttecht both had two RBIs, Snook and Uttecht doubled and Mendez and Newman tripled. Uttecht threw the first 4.1 innings. She gave up six runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Jill Dickson threw the final 2.2 innings and earned the win. She gave up four runs on three hits and struck out four batters.
The Trojans struck first again in the second game with one run in the top of the first, but Dakota Wesleyan (4-14) scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Newman had an RBI single and Bailey Gummer had a bases-clearing double for DWU. The Tigers added three runs in the third on a two-run single from Devinne Facile and an RBI single by Uttecht, and the Tigers looked to end the game early with a seven-run fourth.
Dakota Wesleyan had seven hits in the fourth, including a two-run single from Gummer and a two-run double by Mendez, and also took advantage of two Trojan errors to go up 14-1. The Trojans scored twice in the top of the fifth inning, but the game ended early due to the eight-run rule.
Erickson had three hits to lead Dakota Wesleyan, which had 16 total hits. Gummer went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and Mendez, Newman and Facile each had two RBIs. Dickson threw the first inning, but Tiffany Sharp threw the final four innings to earn the win. She gave up two runs on six hits and struck out two batters.
Dakota Wesleyan is back at home Saturday, April 6, when it hosts Doane College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. at McWhirter Field. The Tigers are on the road Sunday, April 7, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Nebraska Wesleyan University.
