Spring blizzard forces more changes for DWU athletics

MITCHELL, S.D. – The three-day blizzard in Mitchell and the state of South Dakota has set spring sports back at Dakota Wesleyan University and forced changes in most all sports schedules for the coming days and weeks.

The baseball team’s Great Plains Athletic Conference double against Northwestern, scheduled for Friday, April 12 in Mitchell, is postponed to Monday, April 15, at 1 p.m. If the field is not ready by Monday, the game will be played Tuesday in Mitchell. The Tiger baseball team, which is in second in the GPAC (6-2) behind Northwestern (7-1), canceled a nonconference doubleheader Saturday at home against Dakota State. DWU is still scheduled to play Midland University Sunday in Fremont, Neb.

The Tiger softball team canceled a nonconference doubleheader at Dakota State scheduled for Saturday, April 13, in Madison. That game was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday, April 10, was pushed back to Saturday and is now canceled. DWU also pushed back its GPAC doubleheader against Mount Marty College for the second time. The game, originally scheduled for April 9, was pushed back to Monday, April 15, and has been pushed back once more to Monday, April 22, at McWhirter Field in Mitchell.

The Tiger women’s golf team was slated to play at the Augustana College Spring Invite Saturday and Sunday at Prairie Green in Sioux Falls, S.D., but that tournament is canceled.

The DWU men’s and women’s golf teams have also canceled their spring fundraiser, head coach Adam Anderson announced Wednesday night. Dakota Wesleyan was scheduled to host the Tiger Golf Scramble Fundraiser Tournament on Saturday, April 20, but due to course conditions after the recent blizzard, Anderson has decided to cancel the fundraiser. If any Tiger golf fans would still like to support the DWU golf program, contact Anderson at adanders@dwu.edu.

As of Thursday morning, the Tiger men’s golf team is still slated to play at the Wartburg College Invite in Waverly, Iowa, Saturday and Sunday. The DWU track team is also headed to Sioux City, Iowa, for the Sioux City Relays Friday and Saturday April 12-13 as scheduled.
