Tiger men take third at third GPAC Qualifier

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team finished third at the third Great Plains Athletic Conference Qualifier of the season Monday afternoon and moved up to fourth in the team standings.

The Tigers, who were in sixth after two conference qualifiers, shot a 302 Monday afternoon at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, Neb., to move up to fourth overall with one qualifier remaining this spring. Northwestern College won the event with a 291 and remains in the top spot overall and Morningside College took second with a 299. Nebraska Wesleyan finished fourth with a 309 and host-school Doane College shot a 310 and took fifth.

The Red Raiders remain in first in the overall team race with an 865 and Morningside is second with an 891. The Prairie Wolves are third with a 900 and DWU is 23 strokes out of third with a 923. Midland University rounds out the top five with a 931.

Josh Korn paced the Tigers individually Monday afternoon. He tied for fifth with a 74 after shooting a 37 on both the front and back nine at Wilderness Ridge. Austin Hieb and Travis Johnson tied for ninth. Hieb shot a 38 on the front nine and a 37 on the back, and Johnson shot a 37 on the front nine and a 38 on the back. Also for Dakota Wesleyan, Tommy Anderson tied for 19th with a 78 (41, 37) and Tyler Burr tied for 25th (41, 38).

Northwestern’s Neil Malenke won Monday’s tournament with a 68 and Morningside’s Brandon Thompson shot a 71 and finished second. Malenke leads the overall individual race with a 211 and teammate Jay Monahan is second with a 216. Thompson is third with a 218.

Hieb leads the Tigers in the individual conference race after three qualifiers. He is tied for 10th with a 230. Johnson is tied for 16th with a 233, Korn is tied for 18th with a 234 and Burr is tied for 20th with a 235. The final GPAC qualifier of the year is April 25 at The Ridge in Sioux Center, Iowa, and is hosted by Dordt College. DWU is back in action April 13-14 at the Warburg College Invite in Waverly, Iowa.
