SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team played for the first time since April 7 on Tuesday and lost a pair of games to Morningside College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Mustangs won the first game 7-2 and the second 5-1. Dakota Wesleyan is now 6-18 overall and 4-6 and in seventh in the GPAC. The Tigers are winless on the road. Morningside is in second in the league with a 9-1 record.
In the first game Tuesday, Morningside scored two runs in the first inning on three hits. The Tigers tied the game in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer by Vanessa Mendez, but the Mustangs took the lead for good with five runs in the sixth inning. Morningside had four hits, including a two-run double, and took advantage of one DWU error.
Five players had one hit for the Tigers, who had five hits to Morningside’s nine. Jill Dickson threw all six innings and took the loss. She gave up seven runs – only three earned – on nine hits and struck out eight batters.
In the second game, Morningside scored once in the second on a Tiger error. DWU’s lone run came in the top of the third on an RBI single by Mendez, but Morningside added three more runs in the bottom of the inning and a single run in the fourth to end the scoring. The Tigers had four hits and the Mustangs had six. Katie Uttecht threw all six innings and gave up five runs on six hits with six strikeouts.
DWU was scheduled to play Presentation College Thursday, April 18, but that game is canceled due to the weather forecast and poor field conditions. A home doubleheader Saturday, April 20, against Midland is postponed to a date yet to be determined. The Tigers are scheduled to host Mount Marty College Monday, April 22, at McWhirter Field.
