HASTINGS, Neb. – In its first game since April 16, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader to Hastings College Thursday afternoon in Hastings, Neb. The Broncos won the first game 7-0 and the second game 3-2.
Dakota Wesleyan is now 6-20 overall and 4-8 and in ninth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Hastings leads the conference with a 12-2 mark.
In the first game Thursday, the game was scoreless until the fourth when the Broncos scored on an RBI single. Katie Uttecht was hit by a pitch and Vanessa Mendez reached on an error to start the fifth, but DWU failed to score. Hastings added sixth runs in the sixth inning on a sac fly, two RBI walks, an RBI single and a two-run single.
Four players had one hit each for Dakota Wesleyan, which had four total hits. Jill Dickson threw all six innings and gave up seven runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, Hastings scored twice in the first inning on a two-run single, but DWU got within one in the fourth when Tiffany Sharp hit into an RBI groundout. The Tigers tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Lindy Snook, but Hastings scored the game-winning run in the sixth on an RBI single.
Snook went 3-for-4 with one RBI and Katie Anderus had two hits for DWU, which had nine total hits. Dickson threw all six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. She struck out one batter.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday, April 27, when they host Concordia University at 1 p.m. at McWhirter Field. This is DWU’s first home game since Saturday, April 6.
