Tigers earn seventh seed in GPAC softball tournament

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team ended its regular season with a pair of losses to Mount Marty College Tuesday afternoon, but the Tigers still earned the seventh seed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament, it was announced later that night.

Dakota Wesleyan – which ended the regular season 10-24 overall and 8-12 in the league – takes on No. 2 Morningside College at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2, in a first-round game in Sioux City, Iowa. The game was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. but was pushed back due to forecasted rain and field conditions.

Tuesday, the Lancers (6-22, 6-14) scored all the runs they needed in the first inning in a 2-1 win in the first game at McWhirter Field. Mount Marty had an RBI double and an RBI single in the first to grab a 2-0 lead, and held that lead until DWU scored a single run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Devinne Facile.

Facile had two of the Tigers’ seven hits, and DWU’s lone RBI. Katie Uttecht and Meghan Bovee each had a double. Jill Dickson threw all seven innings and gave up two runs on nine hits with 11 strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, Mount Marty scored a single run in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings and two in the fifth for a 6-0 win. Dakota Wesleyan had just four hits to the Lancers’ 12. Tiffany Sharp had two hits for the Tigers. Uttecht threw all seven innings and gave up six runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts in the loss.
