MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s soccer team was picked to finish ninth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, it was revealed Tuesday afternoon when the league’s preseason coaches’ poll was released.
The Tigers, who finished the year 6-11-2 overall and 3-5-2 and ninth in the GPAC in 2012, received 26 points and finished ahead of Briar Cliff University (22) and Mount Marty College (10). Hastings was picked to win the league with 100 points and 10 first-place votes after winning the GPAC regular and postseason titles last season. Midland University finished second with 91 points and the final first-place vote and Northwestern College took third.
Back to lead the Tigers is junior Chaz Foss, who finished second on the team with five goals as a sophomore in 2012 in his first season with the team. Eric Moller is also back after scoring eight goals last year and Tyler Grilley finished the year with two assists. Alex Nelson led the team with 77 saves in 2012, and returns for his sophomore season with the program in 2013. Carlos Mora also returns after earning All-GPAC Honorable Mention accolades as a junior.
Key signees for head coach Jeremy Tosaya this offseason include junior Ryan West and sophomore Derek Granum, who are both transferring from the University of Sioux Falls, and junior Jon Wieger, who played his first two seasons of college soccer at Jamestown College.
Dakota Wesleyan starts the 2013 season with a home scrimmage against Iowa Lakes Community College at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 19, and begins regular-season play on Aug. 31 at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wis.
