LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s soccer team started the 2013 season on the right foot Saturday afternoon with a nonconference victory against Viterbo University.
The Tigers used three first-half goals to propel themselves to a 3-1 win against Viterbo Saturday in La Crosse, Wis. The DWU defense held Viterbo (0-3) scoreless in the second half.
Junior Chaz Foss started the scoring for Dakota Wesleyan 17 minutes into the game off a put back. Less than 10 minutes later, senior Eric Moller scored off an assist from Zach Schneider to put the Tigers up 2-0 with just under 24 minutes gone from the game.
Freshman Sam Roberts notched the first goal of his Tiger career Saturday. He scored less than two minutes after Derby to put Dakota Wesleyan up 3-0 with just under 26 minutes played in the first half. Viterbo got on the board at the 45-minute mark on an unassisted put back by Jordan Penn, but the Tigers held Viterbo scoreless the remainder of the game.
Viterbo put up 18 shots, including six on goal. The Tigers had 20 shots, including six on goal. Keeper Alex Nelson made five saves for Dakota Wesleyan.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday and Sunday with a pair of home games. Saturday, Sept. 7, Dakota Wesleyan hosts Clarke University at 3:30 p.m. at the Pepsi Cola Complex for Family and Friends Day. On Sunday, Sept. 8, DWU hosts Jamestown College at 3:30 p.m. Sunday’s game will be the Tigers’ annual Pack the Pitch game.
