CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golf team started the fall portion of the 2013-14 season with a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Mount Mercy Invite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Tigers shot a two-round total of 665 to finish eight strokes behind host-school Mount Mercy University and William Penn University, which tied for second with 657s. Grand View University won the tournament with a 655. Dakota Wesleyan shot a 340 on Friday on the first day of competition, and shaved 15 strokes off its score with a 325 Saturday afternoon.
Individually, sophomore Lauren Fitts paced Dakota Wesleyan with an eighth-place finish. She shot an 83 Friday and an 80 Saturday for a two-day total of 163. She finished one stroke out of a two-way tie for sixth place. Junior Talia Peters also recorded a top-10 finish. She tied for ninth with a 165 after shooting a 91 Friday and a 74 Saturday afternoon. Peters’ 74 led the field in the second round.
Also for Dakota Wesleyan junior Jenna Winckler tied for 21st and senior Chelsea Burback was right behind in a tie for 23rd. Winckler shot a 170 after carding an 87 on the first day and an 83 on the second. Burback finished with a 171. She shot 83 on Friday and an 88 Saturday. Freshman April Barnett tied for 51st in the first tournament of her collegiate career. She shot an 87 Friday and a 97 Saturday for a two-round total of 184.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7-8, when they travel to Sioux Falls for the Augustana College Invite at Bakker Crossing.
